Hi again! Here is the tutorial for you to create your very own love birds for Valentine’s Day!

I came up with my version of the popular Love Birds theme by incorporating elements of things I saw as I went about my day, mostly the various inspirations included pyjamas, greeting cards, and even grocery store decorations!

You can still vote for my entry of this design for the Nail Polish Canada Valentine’s Day Nail Art contest! My entry is #53 😀

First, you’ll need all the supplies to help you make the creation process as smooth as possible:

Δ Polishes are all colors by piCture pOlish: See swatches and more details of all the polishes here.

Δ Nail Art brushes are super handy. TIP: if you use them with polishes, then don’t invest in anything that cost too much because the chemicals will destroy them. My link takes you to the exact Born Pretty Store 15 piece Set Nail Art Brushes that I have been using, including the 3 pictured above. I purchased my set a while ago and have been testing them out for the recent nail arts that you’ve seen on my blog: Holiday Penguin Nail Art. I have to say that I’ve been really impressed with the quality and the versatility of these brushes. I even clean them with straight acetone and they’re all holding their shape just fine. The whole set is on sale right now for just $5USD with free worldwide shipping! I think it’s a very affordable price and honestly, there’s more than enough for what you’ll need to satisfy your nail art passion! In my picture, the first brush is a fine dotting tool that I love to use for creating simple shapes (like the heart) or for dotting the inside of the eye. Since most of my nail art are quite intricate, my favorite painting brushes are the 2nd and 3rd down. They both have very fine tips, which is perfect for me. And take a look at the 2nd brush, after using it several times with dark black, blue, green, and purple polishes, it’s still white! The 4th brush is a flat, which I like using for clean up after I’m done with my nail art. I dip it in a little bit of acetone and gently sweep it along my cuticles. And, I end up with a perfectly clean cuticle line.

Δ Base coat is a must. I’m using CND Stickey Base Coat

Δ Top coat here is HK Girl Glisten & Glow, the best I’ve found after testing at least 10 other bottles. It drys super fast and there’s no color transfer regardless of how pigmented the colors are underneath and it doesn’t streak! My bottle has about 1/4 left and it’s getting thick, but this is normal for fast drying top coats. I’ll be buying a couple more as back ups soon.

Δ Small glass container to hold your acetone. TIP: I find that using a small glass prevents the acetone from evaporating as quickly as with plastic.

Step by step

ΔStep 1: Paint your names with 2 coats of Bright White

ΔStep 2: Using Pshiiit, and small nail art brushes I showed above, paint sort of a skewed half oval for the body and the bottom of the tail of the bird

ΔStep 3: Using Pshiiit, paint side ways “S” for the head and the top of the tail of the bird. Right now, the green shape should look sort of like half of a Ying Yang sign, if that makes sense LOL

ΔStep 4: Using Pshiiit, fill in the outline to complete the bird’s body

ΔStep 5: Using a dotting tool, or the back of my dotting tool for a larger size, dot a large white circle using Bright Whitedot a slightly smaller black circle using Blackthen using the smallest dotting tool, dot the little white circle in the front center of the 2 other circles.

ΔStep 6: Using Love, outline a heart for the bird’s tail. Then, using Whimsyoutline a heart for the bird’s wing

ΔStep 7: Fill in the 2 hearts from Step 6

ΔStep 8: Using Black and the small nail art brush, paint the beak and the legs. I painted the beak slightly tilting up so the birds look like they’re just about to kiss.

Finally, apply your favorite top coat. I used HK Girl Glisten & Glow here. I used the same painting method except mirroring the image for the purple bird on the ring finger 🙂 Add a few red hearts on the rest of your nails and you’ll get this!
